Lyme Disease and Ticks
During the summer, ticks inhabit wooded, damp and grassy fields and areas. Be sure to check your pet regularly after it has been outdoors especially where these conditions exist. Some Tick bites may be harmless, but others can cause anemia, skin damage and irritation.
Ticks feed on the blood of your pets and people. Diseases that ticks can transmit to companion animals are Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and bacteria’s and blood parasites.
- Pets pick up ticks by visiting places like grassy meadows, woods, brush and weedy areas.
- Be sure to check your pet often if he / she visits these types of environments.
- Safe and effective tick preventives exist as well as vaccination for your dog to prevent Lyme Disease.
Skin Allergies
Almost anything, pollen, dust, smoke, ingredients in pet food and household products or insect bites can cause pets to have allergic reaction. Symptoms may include itchy, swollen skin, difficulty breathing, and disruption of the digestive tract.
Inhalant allergies from pollen and mold often produce severe itching in pets. It is usually concentrated in the ears, feet, groin and armpits, though it can be spread across the entire body.
Flea Allergy
When a flea bites your pet, it injects a small amount of saliva into the skin. Many animals are allergic to this saliva. In highly allergic animals, the bite of one flea can initiate severe itching that last for days past the time of the actual bite.
Biting and scratching around the rump and groin area is the most common sign of flea allergy. Hair loss, scabs and “hot spots” (raw, oozing patches ) often occur secondary to flea allergy. You may not be able to find fleas on your dog very often or at all, since most of the them are in the environment. The presence of flea dirt (feces) on an animal confirms flea infestation.
Allergies can not be cured just controlled, therefore successful control of flea allergy requires the elimination of fleas from contact with the affected dog or cat. Read More....

How to Read the Signs of Parasite Infestation
It’s that time of year to visit or call us for details on what the parasite (fleas, ticks, roundworms, heartworm) situation is in our area. We can direct you to which screenings or preventive treatments are best for your pet.
Signs of External and Internal Parasites
If you notice your pet scratching his/her ears intensely or biting himself, he could have ear mites. Signs include a brown or black crust on the outer ear.
Internal parasites (small parasites that live in the intestinal tract) are very common and can be picked up by pets from the soil outside. Sometimes some of these worm eggs can also be found in compost added to plants in the house. Indoor pets could be infected in the house. Regular de-worming medication is critical for prevention of internal parasites that can affect your pets ability to absorb nutrients. Without treatment they cause discomfort and can potentially damage the lining of the intestinal tract.
