Understanding Pet Vaccines

Pet VaccinationsPet vaccines are powerful tools that protect your pet from disease, whether he is an indoor or outdoor pet. Vaccination provides your pet with the antibodies he needs to fight many of the most common—and serious—diseases that could threaten his health.

  • Vaccines are divided into two categories: core and non-core vaccines. Your pet’s needs will depend on many factors; your veterinarian can help you decide which vaccines are right for your pet during each visit.
  • Core vaccines are those that protect your pet from diseases that can affect all animals, regardless of age, breed, or lifestyle. These vaccines are recommended by veterinarians for all pets and include rabies and distemper.
  • Non-core vaccines are optional pet vaccines that protect pets exposed to certain lifestyle situations. Such situations may include travel to or living in an area where certain diseases are more common, or diseases more likely to affect pets that are young or old. Non-core vaccines may include feline leukemia in cats and bordetella or leptospirosis in dogs.

Steps in Your Pet’s Wellness Exam

Annual visits to the vet provide a baseline to monitor your pet’s health and address his changing needs. During your pet’s physical wellness exam, your veterinarian will check your pet for changes in his health and help you determine whether any treatments or therapies are needed. Some of the steps your veterinarian will perform during your pet’s physical exam include:

  • watching your pet sit, stand, and walk to spot signs of injury or degenerative disease.
  • checking your pet’s weight and temperature.
  • looking at your pet’s eyes, ears, coat, and skin to evaluate general health and nutrition or look for areas of infection, irritation, or injury.
  • inspecting your pet’s breath, mouth, and teeth to check for signs of dental disease.
  • listening to your pet’s breathing and heart rate with a stethoscope.
  • palpation of your pet’s body, limbs, and tail to check for swelling or masses.

Other shots that animals may receive include:

  • Bordetella
  • Canine Influenza
  • Chlamydia
  • Feline Leukemia
  • Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
